Steve Pickett is principal contrabassoon with the Ulster Orchestra, which he joined in 1981. As a composer, he is best known in the field of music education where he has written many works for professional players working with young musicians. He has been commissioned by the Ulster Orchestra, Opera Northern Ireland and chamber groups such as the Orion String Quartet, the Orion Duo and The Singing Wardrobes double bass quartet. The Children of Lir, a masque for wind quintet and young performers, was commissioned by the Ulster Orchestra in 2001 for the orchestra’s participation in the UKwithNY festival but, although it was later performed at the North Down Institute in Bangor, the trip to the USA fell victim to the September 11 atrocity in New York Other works include RMS Titanic, an Ulster Orchestra commission for GCSE A-Level students; The Four Elements (first performed at the 1999 Fishguard festival) and Two plus Three equals Five, both written for the Belfast Wind Quintet; a music theatre piece for the Orion Duo; and a Sonata for Violin and Piano for Ruth Bebb and Christopher Blake.
