Featuring RTÉ Concert Orchestra; Gavin Maloney, conductor; Hugh Tinney, piano; Silvija Ščerbavičiūtė, flute.

New Music Dublin’s 2024 opening orchestral concert is given by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra under the baton of Gavin Maloney, returning NMD stalwart and the orchestra’s Associate Principal Conductor.

Hugh Tinney - well-loved Irish piano virtuoso and National Concert Hall favourite - returns to NMD as soloist in the world premiere of CMC Composer Raymond Deane’s Anaphora, commissioned for him by RTÉ following Hugh’s remarkable tour-de force performance of the composer’s Noctuary at NMD 2019. Alongside this runs a new orchestral commission for CMC composer Deidre Gribbin, a ‘charismatic and intriguing’ (The Independent) voice in contemporary music whose work ranges across multiple subjects, recently including music for Stolen; a documentary about Ireland's Mother and Baby Homes scandal premiered at the Dublin Film Festival in 2023.

The programme is completed by a homage to Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho in the form of her work Aile du songe, with soloist Silvija Ščerbavičiūtė, RTÉ Concert Orchestra Principal Flute. Kaija Saariaho, who sadly died in 2023, was a much-garlanded and much-missed composer and musical inspiration to many in Ireland and around the globe.

Anaphora is commissioned by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

Whispering Ogham is co-commissioned by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and New Music Dublin.
