In this song cycle the texts are actual segments of conversations with patients during Ian Wilson’s residency at the Stroke Unit of the Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Tallaght. Each song by Wilson segues into a song sung by Doris Day, the latter always reflecting on the former in ways which can be by turns poignant and witty.

‘Still Life in Green and Red’ is a work by Ian Wilson for string quartet and soundtrack composed in 2011 as part of Mayo County Council's Landmark Public Art programme. The work is performed by the ConTempo String Quartet and the recorded soundtrack, which was realised by Stephen McCourt, is made from interviews which Wilson recorded as part of the residency in Mayo.

The Book of Ways is a collaboration between composer Ian Wilson, saxophonist Cathal Roche and the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet. I-Ching, an ancient Chinese system of divination, forms the basis of a musical structure, devised by Roche and Wilson, that marries improvisation and notation, improviser and classical ensemble.

In shadows features one of Ian Wilson's most significant recent works, re:play for (improvising) tenor saxophone, string quartet, piano and double bass. Ian Wilson’s ‘Una Santa Oscura’ (’an obscure saint’) is inspired by Hildegard of Bingen, a German abbess, mystic and composer. The music is partly ritualistic and meditative in nature, structured to reflect a ‘cloistered’ day. An electronically-generated tape part plays almost continuously, and much of its basis is one of Hildegard’s compositions, ‘Ave Maria, O auctrix vite’, which is heard at the very end of the work. The work is performed by Ioana Petcu-Colan.

Sullen earth was specially commissioned by the Belgrade Strings, with funds from the Arts Council of Ireland. Here it is conducted by Ian Wilson, and features soloist Gordana Matijevi -Nedeljkovi . Limena and The Capsizing Man and other stories are also featured on this recording.

Ian Wilson's Double Trio was written for three improvisers and three classical musicians as part of a one-year composer residency in Dún Laoighaire-Rathdown County during 2008. The work is inspired by a number of interviews conducted by the composer with residents of the Glencullen area, Ireland, who discussed how they felt about the changes the area had undergone during the Celtic Tiger economic boom. The intention was to create an exciting and inventive musical work and at the same time attempt to paint a musical picture of life in Glencullen.

Tundra was based on an idea by Anne Gilpin. It is inspired by William Wordsworth’s poem “Composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey” and Laura Gilpin’s photograph “The Prairie”. Included in this CD is Ian Wilson’s ‘Spilliaert’s Beach’, inspired by Belgian artist Leon Spillaert’s painting Moonlit Beach (1908). This is a dark, almost abstract work with a single shining focus. The work is dedicated to flautist Nancy Ruffer who forms part of the duo, along with pianist Helen Crayford that present this compilation of pieces from American and British composers.

The Amstel Saxophone Quartet’s compilation of contemporary European compositions includes Ian Wilson’s So Softly (1992). The directness of communication is clearly represented in the piece, about which the composer wrote ‘Cast in four sections, the rhythm of the outer tones has the rise and fall of breathing. The piece itself is mostly gentle, almost like a lullaby, with a sense of appearing from, and disappearing into nothingness.’

This fourth album of test pieces was specially commissioned by RTE Lyric FM for the 2003 AXA Dublin International Piano Competition as part of an ongoing collaboration with the Contemporary Music Centre.The works range from Frank Corcoran’s energetic Sweeney’s Total Rondo to the evocative sounds and historical connotations of Michael Holohan’s Monaincha. Verschwindend by Ian Wilson is detailed and rhythmic in contrast to the poetry and pianism of In a Thousand Valleys Far and Wide by Philip Martin.
