This work is based on the opening motif, a 'take' from Messiaen (D flat-C flat-B flat), hence the 'French' in the title. The fact that it is 'kind of blues-y' accounts for the second part of the title. It is one of three 'colour' pieces for piano which the composer subsequently wrote, the others being Irish Green and African Black. Commissioned as a test piece by the GPA Dublin International Piano Competition 1991 with funds provided by The Arts Council/An Chomhairle EalaĆon. |
