These five short ‘postcards from Sicily’ were written at the request of the German pianist, Gertrud Firnkees. ‘Following a holiday in Taormina’, the composer writes, ‘I attempted to capture some of the warmth and colour of Sicily in musical miniatures. Various scenes are painted by each piece: the majesty of Etna; a ride in the cable car (Funivia); a sunny day in the public gardens; Isola Bella viewed at a distance from above; the mountain town of Castelmola illuminated by fireworks at night. The pieces may also be played separately.’ |
